If one or both legs are damaged or bent the screw cover strips need to be replaced.
Use the screwdriver to chisel out any wood in the frame that may prevent the door from latching.
Remove the screws and cover plates.
The pella contact suggested removing the screw cover strip on the latch side and removing the 5 screws holding the latch side trim.
Fit the straight outer leg into the mounting rail first and then snap in the inner leg which may have a hook.
Once the door is open operate the handle and turn the deadbolt.
Using a rasp or file carefully remove excess material from bottom of each hole in strike plate about 1 8.
Had to replace this hardware.
Replace the screws and tighten.
Open door and remove strike plate.
This will loosen the tension on the deadbolt allowing it to retract and the door to open.
Twist the hinge rail screws a quarter turn each counterclockwise using a flat screwdriver.
If either does not operate when the door is open the hardware needs to be replaced.
Reinstall strike plate and test operation.
Pretty scary thinking that storm door wouldn t open properly in case of emergency.

This loosens the tension in the hinges to make the door easier to open.
Place the new mortise lock.
This is a waste of time because the striker plate is still held firmly by 3 screws you can t get to.
To unjam the deadbolt remove the installation screws on the latch rail from the outside.
Loosen the set screw.
The hinge rail runs vertically along the hinge side of the door.
Use pencil to mark on strike plate location of deadbolt and spring latch.
Start at the top end and slide your finger down the strip while pressing firmly.
Using an allen key loosen the set screw and remove the interior door handle.
Remove the lock body.
